If San Diego prices are too high for you or you just want something newer, then consider the 55+ communities in Riverside County. Most of them are relatively new, or still under construction, since that is where land is available. You can find larger homes all on one level here, and the prices are about $100K less than San Diego County.

The climate is not as temperate as San Diego’s in these inland communities. You can expect hotter summer days, and colder winter nights.

These active adult communities are the closest to San Diego and so they benefit from the cooler smog-free air coming from Oceanside:

The Colony in Murrieta
Four Seasons in Murrietta
The Oasis in Menifee
Orchid & Primrose at Pacific Mayfield in Menifee

Here are some other Riverside County retirement communities:

Four Seasons in Hemet
Sun Lakes in Banning
Trilogy in Glen Ivy
Solera by Del Webb in Beaumont
Rancho Diamonte by Del Webb in Hemet

Southwest Riverside County is centrally located in Southern California. You can be in Orange County, San Diego, or Palm Springs in about an hour and a half. This makes it ideal for those who have kids or grandkids scattered around Southern California. And the prices are almost as low as many other retirement destinations much further away. So why get on a plane every time you want to see the family when you can live here and retire just as affordably?
